It’s no secret—we’re a steak-loving household. My 10-year-old keeps the requests coming, and my older boys are basically bottomless pits. Steak is always a win: hearty, satisfying, and guaranteed to keep everyone happy. I love making a good skillet steak because it’s fast, foolproof, and tastes straight out of a restaurant. One of our absolute favorites? My garlic butter herb steak and potatoes, a one-pan wonder that disappears fast.

How do you cook a steak on acast iron skillet?

  • Let the steak sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Season the steak generously on each side with salt and pepper. In a cast-iron skillet with 1 Tablespoon of oil over high heat add the garlic butter herb steaks to the pan and sear each side 3 minutes or until brown.
  • Reduce heat to medium low. Cook the steak to desired doneness. Rare = 125 degrees, Medium Rare = 135 degrees, Medium = 145 degrees, Medium Well = 150 degrees and Well Done = 160 degrees. Some say to flip only once while cooking, I like to flip mine a few times.
  • Right before serving the steak slather the butter compound on top and let it melt into the tender steak. This gives it a nice finishing touch and adds such great flavor.

  • Turn the skillet to high heat. Season the 2 (8-ounce) lean New York Steak strip steaks with salt and pepper to taste . Add the steak to the skillet and cook on each side for 3 minutes or until outside is browned. Reduce heat to medium-high. Cook the steaks to the desired doneness about 8-10 minutes.

To make the garlic butter compound

  • In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup softened unsalted butter , 3 minced garlic cloves , 1 teaspoon chopped thyme , 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary and 1 teaspoon chopped oregano . Slather on top of steaks.
  • Add the mushrooms back to the pan and heat through and let the butter melt into the steaks.
