I had my first Monte Cristo sandwich at Disneyland and knew I had to recreate it at home! The melty cheese, savory ham and turkey , and golden-fried French toast bread deliver all the magic without the theme park ticket.

A Reader’s Review

This recipe is excellent! Made it for lunch with red raspberry jam. Oh, my! Thank you so much for sharing it.

Why This Sandwich Is Too Good To Share

  • Passes the Test! I’ve served this to picky kids, skeptical adults, and die-hard Disneyland fans—and every time, it disappears fast.
  • Sweet & Savory: It might sound strange, but dipping this sandwich in jam is the secret to pure magic. The combo makes this sandwich unforgettable!
  • Amazing Texture: The outside is perfectly golden-brown and crispy, while the melty cheese and savory meats create a perfect balance in every bite.

  • Cheese Swaps: You can use provolone or gruyere cheese in place of Swiss.
  • Jam Options: You can swap the raspberry jam for strawberry , apricot, or even fig preserves, or drizzle a little honey for a fun twist.
  • Skip the Sweet: You can leave out the jam and powdered sugar if you prefer it savory, but you’ll miss the magic of this sandwich.

Disneyland Monte Cristo Recipe

This sandwich tastes like you’re sitting in New Orleans Square, people-watching and living your best Disney day. It’s so simple and worth every minute spent making it!

  1. Make and Spread Sauce: Add the butter and olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium. Lay the slices of bread out on a baking sheet or a clean surface. Combine the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard in a small bowl, then divide it among the pieces of bread until they each have a light layer on them.
  2. Add Cheese: For each sandwich, add 1 slice of Swiss cheese to each slice of bread.
  3. Add Ham and More Cheese: Add 2 slices of ham on one piece of bread. Add one more slice of Swiss on top of the ham.
  4. Add Turkey: Add 2 slices of turkey on top of the cheese and ham, then top it with the other side of the bread for each sandwich.
  5. Dredge: Whisk the eggs in a shallow bowl before carefully dredging each side of the bread until coated, then add the sandwich to the hot skillet.
  6. Brown Sandwiches in Skillet: Cook on each side for 2-3 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and the meats and cheese are heated throughout. Slice the sandwiches in half before dusting them with powdered sugar and serving with raspberry jam on the side.

Alyssa’s Pro Tip:

Heating It Through: To melt the cheese and heat everything evenly, cover the sandwiches with a pan placed upside down. It traps the heat, allowing the cheese to melt and the meat to heat without burning the bread.

Make Ahead, Storage, and Reheating Tips

  • Make-Ahead: Assemble the sandwiches with mustard, mayo, meat, and cheese, then wrap in foil and refrigerate for up to 2 days. When ready to eat, dip in egg and cook. Just don’t forget the jam and powdered sugar!
  • Fridge Storage: Keep cooked Monte Cristo sandwiches in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in the microwave for about 1 minute, or use the air fryer for a few minutes to crisp them up again.
  • Freezing: Not recommended—the bread gets soggy and takes too long to thaw. Better to make them fresh!
